The provision of energy services and enhancement of regional cooperation in that area are essential to achieving sustainable development and regional integration as they contribute to driving the production forward and creating employment opportunities in all economic sectors, which in turn lead to economic growth and social stability. |

This study focuses on diverse standards used in developing e-services. It starts by mentioning the importance of e-services, and the role of standards in increasing its adoption. Then, it lists the main Standard Developing Organizations. Standards for specifying e-services are first described, especially those related to web service development, data encoding and exchange, electronic data interchange, and web service routing and addressing. The study also describes the main e-service security standards, main standard frameworks used for e-Business and e-Commerce applications. |

Information Society Measurement: Building a Common Benchmarking Model for the ESCWA Region |
Closing the digital divide and bringing home the benefits of the information society are important concerns to member countries of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). For policymakers to accurately determine which development strategies will be the most effective, a comparable and clear measurement model is vital. Key indicators need to be defined and statistical models that can be used to assess the current status of the information society, measure its many facets and monitor progress towards its realization must be developed. |
