United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim arrived this evening in Beirut to assume his responsibilities. He was received at the Rafik Hariri International Airport by Iraqi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Al Ameri, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Khawla Mattar, ESCWA Secretary Karim Khalil and a number of officials in the Commission. Before his appointment, Alhakim was the Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Iraq to the United Nations in New York since May 2013.
 

UN-ESCWA is organizing an “Expert Group Meeting on “Sustainable Land Management as a Best Practice to Enhance Rural Development in the ESCWA Region” from 25 to 27 March 2009 at the UN House, Riad el Solh Ave. Attending the meeting, which opens at 10:00 AM on Tuesday 25 March, are experts representing thirteen Ministries of Agriculture in the UN-ESCWA region.

By the end of 2011, online social network Facebook users reached 481 million, demanding an expansion in software industry, as mentioned in the Information Economy Report 2012 released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Entitled “The Software Industry and Developing Countries,” the Report was launched by ESCWA today 28 November 2012, at its Headquarters in Beirut.

Policy-makers from governmental institutions in charge of ICT policy development, particularly from least developed and post-conflict countries in the region, will attend a Workshop on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy Making in UNESCWA Member Countries. Organized by UNESCWA in coordination with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the workshop will last from 2 to 4 May 2006, at the UN House, Beirut.
