ESCWA and the International Renewable Energy Conference |
Investment in alternative energy offers a range of benefits, not only for energy security or environmental considerations but also for the socio-economic gains they can generate. Renewable energy global demand continues to rise, contributing an estimated 19% of global final energy consumption in 2011. Renewables constituted more than 26% of global generating capacity and contributed an estimated 21.7% of global electricity, while creating an estimated 5.7 million jobs for people working directly or indirectly in the renewable energy sector in 2012. |

ESCWA Discusses Financial Crisis, Launches 35th Anniversary |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will hold the 3rd Meeting of its Technical Committee in Beirut on 21 July to discuss the financial crisis, food safety, climate change and some internal issues of the Commission. The meeting's opening at the UN House will also witness the official launching of the 35th Anniversary of ESCWA. |

Launching of E-Caravan Project for South Lebanon |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy considered the mobile computer school project a join effort between the United Nations agencies in Lebanon, foreign and Arab embassies, civil society organizations, and the banking and private sectors. Tallawy was speaking at a press conference held today to launch the E-Caravan project for South Lebanon implemented by UNESCWA in cooperation with “Fondation Saradar”. The launching took place under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Communication Marwan Hamadeh represented by the ministry’s Director-General Naji Andraos. |
