In line with ESCWA mandate to follow-up on progress of international conventions and provide support to Member Countries in implementing and meeting their commitments to international goals and agreements, the Commission participated in the 18th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, held in Doha, Qatar (COP18/CMP8) on 26 November-7 December 2012.

On 8 March 2013, ESCWA commemorated International Women’s Day in its Beirut headquarters, in the presence of UN officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations working on women’s rights, and a host of activists, media and academia.

Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions.

On 14 November 2016, President of the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan (RSS) and of ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) Board of Governors Princess Sumaya bint Al Hassan headed the 6th Meeting of the Board, which includes representatives of 16 Arab States, to discuss and adopt ETC 2017 work plan. The meeting was held in Amman, Jordan.

In her opening speech, Princess Sumayya underlined the importance of scientific research in comprehensive and sustainable human development, and its clear and efficient impact on solving economic, development, and even political issues.
