On World Water Day: UNESCWA Says Region Facing Dangerous Strategic Challenge |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), one of the regional bodies of the UN, said Western Asia is facing a dangerous strategic challenge in relation to the water situation given that the origin of most water in the region lies outside it. This statement came in an UNESCWA statement on the occasion of World Water Day, 22 March 2006. |

UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy met in Khartoum today with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Discussions focused on the regional situation, what UNESCWA is providing for Palestine and Iraq, and Arab regional integration. Tallawy is in the Sudanese capital to attend the Arab Summit on 28 and 29 March 2006 as part of the United Nations delegation. |

The Director of the UNESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division, Ms. Anhar Hegazi today said, “Despite the achievements of Arab countries in answering the basic needs of their populations, including providing housing, infrastructure, and social and service sectors as well as ensuring the continuity of these efforts, the absence of equal rights and the gap in answering the basic needs of various social segments represents a major threat to development results and to achieving sustainability. |

UNESCWA to Launch Pioneering Study on Women in the Arab World |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will be holding a press conference to launch a pioneering study on the history of women’s movements in the Arab world tomorrow, Tuesday, 18 April 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the UN House, Beirut. Lebanese women parliamentarians and Arab and foreign ambassadors accredited to Lebanon have been invited to this event, as well as a number of political, economic and media figures. Also invited are experts on women’s issues and representatives of UN and nongovernmental organizations in Lebanon. |

The Seventh Session of UNESCWA Committee on Transport will convene at the UN House, Beirut, on Monday 17 April 2006 at 10:00 a.m. under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Mohammed Safadi. The meeting will continue until 19 April and discuss major issues that concern the transport sector due to its importance and its direct impact on the economies of the countries in the region. |

Bahrain and UNESCWA to Hold Meeting on Social Policies |
In the run-up to the “National Conference on Social Policies in Bahrain” being organized by the Bahraini Ministry of Social Development and UNESCWA in Manama on 24 and 25 April, Bahraini Social Development Minister Fatima bint Mohamed Al Beloushi hoped the conference would be an opportunity for dialogue and partnership to establish social policies for the Kingdom that are based on scientific planning. She also hoped it would lead to a national consensus on social policies between the Ministry of Social Development and concerned experts from the public and private sectors. |
