ESCWA wrapped-up the twelfth session of its Transport Committee with recommendations that highlighted road safety, an issue member countries were called to consider a priority, implementing by such the eponym UN Decade of Action launched last week.

The committee had convened at the UN House in Beirut, on 17-19 May. A slew of officials gathered for the event, including representatives from ESCWA’s 14 member countries, and regional as well as international organizations.

Under the Patronage of Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan (RSS) and  President of the Board of Governors of the UN-ESCWA Technology Center (ETC), the Science Diplomacy Program at RSS, UN-ETC in partnership with International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) and US Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF Global), held on 13-14 December 2016, the 1st Arab Leadership Dialogue on Science Advice to Governments, in Dead Sea, Jordan.
 

UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary, Bader Omar AlDafa today tackled the participation of the private sector in the regional economies, the solutions to the challenges this sector faces and the role of UN-ESCWA in helping member countries strengthen it. These issues were highlighted in AlDafa's address to the "Arab Economic Integration from the Private Sector's Perspective" forum.

ESCWA held an expert group meeting on 30-31 May at the UN-House, Beirut, to discuss and assess the key findings of the study "Policies to Empower Women in the Arab Region: Combating Violence against Women and Girls". ESCWA and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN) had prepared a study with support from the Norwegian Embassy in Lebanon.
