Regional commission marks World Water Day, says millions of Arabs still lack basic water services |
Beirut, 22 March 2019 (ESCWA)--While 51 million people from the Arab region still lacked basic water drinking services, 73% of them lived in rural areas. This is among the conclusions of the new version of ‘2019 United Nations World Water Development Report” (WWDR 2019) launched today at the regional level by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) as it marked World Water Day in its Beirut headquarters. |

ESCWA Marks World Water Day in Amman |
“Over 80% of the world’s wastewater is released to environment without treatment,” the UN World Water Development Report 2017 reads. On this year’s World Water Day themed around “Why Waste Water,” ESCWA hosted on 22 March 2017 a ceremony in Amman under the auspices of Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazim El Naser, in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA) and the Swedish government. |
