27 March 2019	Regional commission marks World Water Day, says millions of Arabs still lack basic water services	Beirut, 22 March 2019 (ESCWA)--While 51 million people from the Arab region still lacked basic water drinking services, 73% of them lived in rural areas. This is among the conclusions of the new version of ‘2019 United Nations World Water Development Report” (WWDR 2019) launched today at the regional level by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) as it marked World Water Day in its Beirut headquarters.
11 December 2014	UN-LAS Cooperation Meeting Opens in Vienna Deputy Executive Secretary: ESCWA-LAS Partnership at Heart of Commission’s Strategy	ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khoury stressed that the League of Arab States (LAS) and ESCWA are longtime partners in development in the region, adding that since its establishment, the Commission has viewed its partnership with LAS as a critical component in its regional role, both by mandate and in practice.
6 April 2017	ESCWA Marks World Water Day in Amman	“Over 80% of the world’s wastewater is released to environment without treatment,” the UN World Water Development Report 2017 reads. On this year’s World Water Day themed around “Why Waste Water,” ESCWA hosted on 22 March 2017 a ceremony in Amman under the auspices of Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazim El Naser, in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA) and the Swedish government.
11 December 2014	Ministerial Session Discusses Economic Policies in Support of Social Justice	The second panel of the 28th ministerial session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) convened this afternoon to discuss the topic “Economic policies in support of social justice”, examining the connections between economics and social justice, and the impact of various economic and fiscal policies on social and economic development from an equity and justice perspective.
29 May 2016	Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2016	ESCWA, in cooperation with the members of Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) and the League of Arab States (LAS), will organize the 2016 Arab Forum for Sustainable Development, in hotel Kempinski, Amman, from 29 to 30 May 2016. The Forum opens at 10:00 AM, Sunday 29 May 2016, with speeches by Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, Deputy Secretary General, League of Arab States Ahmed Ben Helli, Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, H.E. Imad N. Fakhoury.
11 December 2014	Moroccan Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment Opens ESCWA Conference on Renewable Energy	Moroccan Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment Abdelkader Amara will open the regional conference on "Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development in Rural Areas of the ESCWA Region,” organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) from 26 to 28 November 2013, in Hotel Rabat, Morocco.
15 June 2017	ESCWA Marks 2017 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought	Under the auspices and in presence of Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Ghazi Zaayter, ESCWA observed on 15 June 2017 the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (WDCD) at the UN House in Beirut.

2 August 2016	Khawla Mattar of Bahrain Appointed as Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCWA	United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Ms. Rima Khalaf today announced the appointment of Ms. Khawla Mattar (The Kingdom of Bahrain) as Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support. Ms. Mattar is bringing with her a vast working experience in development and political offices of the UN. She has also worked closely on issues of gender; equality; human rights; migrant workers; rights at work for all and children’s rights.
11 December 2014	Road Safety on ESCWA’s Agenda	The Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the Action Plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011- 2020) kicked off today in Amman, Jordan. Government delegates, academics, and representatives from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, national and regional agencies working in the field of road safety are participating in this meeting.
