ESCWA & partners warn: violence against women has increased due to COVID-19; Women will lose twice as much as men in terms of jobs |
Beirut, 6 April 2020--While COVID-19 is affecting people indiscriminately, women and girls are among the most vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic. A new policy brief by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and other United Nations entities (attached) emphasizes that existing domestic violence and social challenges faced by women and girls in the Arab region have worsened. |

The Global Trade Facilitation Conference 2013, organized by the five UN Regional Commissions just concluded in Bangkok, Thailand, calling on all countries to continue their efforts to cut red tape and simplify trade procedures in order to achieve more sustainable and inclusive development. The conference was organized during the Third Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Week held by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and is part of the ‘Joint UN Regional Commissions Approach to Trade Facilitation’. |

ESCWA Presents Latest Report on Palestine, Condemns Civilian Loss of Life in Gaza |
On the occasion of delivering a Secretary-General report in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today condemned the targeting of civilian structures and the killing of civilians in the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip. The Commission expressed its grave concern vis-à-vis this escalation, specifically the violations of international humanitarian law, in addition to the economic, social and humanitarian consequences which exacerbate the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. |

The Deputy Director of the ESCWA Centre for Women, Ms. Mehrinaz El-Awady, today said that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development may form a turning point in development policies in the world, underlining a shift in the philosophy of development from specific development policies linked to narrow thematic frameworks to more inclusive policies that require action in different fields. |

Reviewing Arab Development Patterns, Creating Sustainable Development Bodies Urged |
Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions. |

Beirut, 18 March 2020--In addition to the rising death toll and extremely heavy burden on health-care systems, the Arab region is suffering from losses of jobs at an alarming rate due to COVID-19, according to a policy brief issued today by ESCWA featuring the first economic assessment of the cost of the pandemic on the region. |
