In cooperation with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) holds the Western Asia Regional Ministerial Meeting on “Addressing Non-communicable Diseases and Injuries: Major Challenges to Sustainable Development in the 21st Century”, on 10-11 May 2009 in Doha. Hosted by the Government of Qatar, the meeting comes in support of the 2009 Economic and Social Council’s Annual Ministerial Review (AMR). |

On 22 April of every year the world marks the International Mother Earth Day. This year’s theme is “Trees for the Earth”. Earth Day aims to refocus the world’s attention on the need to protect the environment in order to keep it healthy for current and future generations. Beirut, 30 April, 2012 (ESCWA Communications and Information Unit)- The Arab Region is in search of a new development paradigm to ensure greater participation of the youth in economic and public life, focusing more on social justice and accountability. Thus, “The Role of Participation and Social Justice in Achieving Sustainable and Balanced Development” will be one of the main topics to be discussed in a ministerial round table during the ESCWA 27th Ministerial Session to be held under the auspices of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati on 9-10 May 2012. |
