A crowd of Arab ministers and experts have agreed on the importance of ESCWA continuing to support National Women’s Machineries in order to estimate the economic cost of violence against women in the Arab region and to implement the Action Plan for Gender Equality in line with the specificities of States. They also stressed the need to continue to support the capacity building of the Arab States to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Beirut, 14 May 2019 (ESCWA)--Recent studies show that youth unemployment’s rates in the Arab region are twice as high as the global average and 40% of the Arab population is suffering from multi-dimensional poverty. In this context, a 2-day expert group meeting (EGM) at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut discussed “Leaving No One Behind: Reaching the Most Marginalized in Selected Countries in the Arab Region,” namely Egypt, Lebanon, and Tunisia.
 

UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said the determination of Arab women led to the achievement of a series of measures related to the progress of women and their empowerment in the Arab world.

Tallawy was speaking at a ceremony held under her aegis on the occasion of International Women’s Day and organized by the Middle East Achievement Awards Institute at Burj Al Arab, Dubai, last night. The ceremony was attended by a host of political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural figures who came together to honor 5 prominent Arab women.
