The “High-Level Meeting on Beyond Populism: Economic Challenges and Opportunities in Democratic Transitions,” opened today in the Moroccan capital Rabat, as organized by ESCWA in cooperation with the other regional commissions of the United Nations on 5-6 February 2013. The Meeting was held in the presence of Minister of State Abdallah Baha Representing King Muhammad VI and Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister for General Affairs and Good Governance Mohamed Najib Boulif. |

Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda in the Arab Region |
The Arab region suffers from pressing environmental challenges such as water scarcity, desertification, land degradation and reduction in arable land areas, which negatively impact access to food especially in rural and marginalized areas. Since more than a decade, ESCWA works closely in partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS) and UN Environment on sustainable development issues including provision of adequate tools to monitor and assess the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda. |

The United Arab Emirates Hosts the “Thinking digital? Let’s innovate in Arabic!” competition |
The digital Arabic content (DAC) competition was launched on 10 April 2014 in the United Arab Emirates within the scope of cooperation between ESCWA and Abu Dhabi University (ADU) and in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The launch was part of a workshop, hosted at the Abu Dhabi Chamber and attended by over 50 participants representing the academic sector, fund agencies, companies involved in DAC development, as well as young entrepreneurs and university students. |

The Director of the UNESCWA Sustainable Development and Productivity Division, Ms. Anhar Hegazi today said, “Despite the achievements of Arab countries in answering the basic needs of their populations, including providing housing, infrastructure, and social and service sectors as well as ensuring the continuity of these efforts, the absence of equal rights and the gap in answering the basic needs of various social segments represents a major threat to development results and to achieving sustainability. |

ESCWA Launches Socioeconomic Developments Survey |
A United Nations ESCWA annual survey on the Economic and Social Developments for 2010-2011 was released on 31 January, reflecting the dramatic changes the region has witnessed while moving from the first to the second decade of the 21st century. The survey made observations, provided data to understand and explain the dynamics of regional, sub-regional and country-specific social and economic trends. Its objective is to provide a snapshot of the current socioeconomic situation and an outlook for 2012. |

Held under the title “The Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab States,” the ESCWA 29th Session opened today in Doha, Qatar, at the level of senior delegates, and will open at the ministerial level tomorrow 14 December. The ESCWA Session is held at the Sheraton Grand hotel in Doha until 15 December 2016, when participants will issue a declaration focusing on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab States. |
