11 December 2014	UN Marks Int'l Women's Day, Urges Media Focus on Rural Women, Ending Stereotypes	The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the UN Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC) today marked the International Women’s Day (IWD), holding two roundtables that recommended emphasizing the needs of rural and poor women and introducing laws to protect women from stereotypical images in the media.
11 December 2014	World Water Day at ESCWA, Optimizing Water Use Urged	United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said agriculture is by far the main user of freshwater, and unless we increase our capacity to wisely manage its use, we will fail to end hunger and we will open the door to a range of other ills, including drought, famine and political instability. The admonition came in a message by Ban on the occasion of the World Water Day, which was marked today by at the UN House in Beirut by ESCWA, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC).
11 December 2014	Regional Commission Discusses Key Role of Information and Communication Technologies	ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khouri today said Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) played a key role during the Arab spring whether through the communication tools or the online social media. Khouri was addressing the opening session of the sixth meeting of ESCWA Consultative Committee on Scientific and Technological Development and Technological Innovation (ESTIC), held at the UN House, Beirut.
11 December 2014	ESCWA Launches 2011 Report on Information Society in Western Asia	The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on 4 May said that countries with a low Gross National Income (GNI) spend on the information and communication services more than the developed ones, and that the Arab region comes in the second rank in terms of the cost of these services.
11 December 2014	Senior Officials Segment of ESCWA’S 27th Session Kicks Off	The Senior Official Segment of ESCWA’s 27th Ministerial Session opened on 7 May at the U.N. House in Beirut. Speakers at the opening were the Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Mr. Nadim Khoury, the Director of International Cooperation in the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Ms. Zeina Touqan, representing the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which chaired the 26th Session, and the Executive Director of the Economic Policy Affairs in the Emirati Ministry of Economy, Mr. Mohamad Saleh Shalwah.

Speakers at the opening ceremony were Mr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in Jordan, which chaired the 26th Session of the Commission, Mr. Sultan Bin Said Al-Mansoori, Minister of Economy in the United Arab Emirates chairing the current Session, Ms. Rima Khalaf, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, and Mr.

11 December 2014	Helsinki University Students Visit ESCWA, Get Briefed on its Objectives and Programmes	A group of Political Studies students from the University of Helsinki visited ESCWA on 16 May 2012 and learned about its objectives and programmes. The students were briefed on the role of ESCWA, as one of the United Nations Regional Commissions, and the opportunities and challenges facing the region. The briefing emphasized the regional priority agenda, especially the Rio+20 Conference, which will convene in June 2012, and the efforts of ESCWA in the regional preparations for this event.
11 December 2014	ESCWA Hosts Lecture on Public Health in the Arab World	On 5 June 2012, ESCWA hosted a lecture on the book “Public Health in the Arab World.” Invited by ESCWA Staff Council, Mr. Samer Jabbour, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, delivered a lecture on the book, which he edited together with Ms. Rita Giacaman, Professor at the Institute of Community and Public Health at Birzeit University and Mr. Iman Nuwayhid, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, and Mr. Marwan Khawaja, ESCWA Chief of Social Statistics Section.
11 December 2014	First Meeting of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group of the Arab Internet Governance Forum - El Sherbiny: Such Forums Confirm the Need for Dialogue	Under the umbrella of ESCWA and the League of Arab States (LAS), the first meeting of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) of the Arab Internet Governance Forum (Arab IGF) was held on 18-19 June 2012 in Cairo, Egypt. The meeting was convened by the Arab IGF secretariat, represented by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt, in collaboration with the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO), and was sponsored by the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS) and CISCO Systems.
