ESCWA National Conference on Decentralization and Local Governance in Iraq |
ESCWA convened a national conference on decentralization and local governance in Iraq entitled "Instigating an Evidence-based and Home-Grown National Strategy for the Promotion of Decentralization and Local Governance in Iraq". The conference, which was held in Erbil on 14-15 June 2011, gathered more than 120 participants from federal, regional and local governments, alongside representatives of Iraqi parliament, civil society and private sector. |

Iraqi Human Rights Minister Visits UNESCWA, Meets Tallawy |
Iraqi Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Mikhail said today, “UNESCWA provides major support for her Ministry and the activities it intends to undertake.” She was speaking following her visit this afternoon to the UNESCWA headquarters in Riad el Solh Square, where she met with Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Antoine Mansour, head of UNESCWA’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI). |

European University Students Visit ESCWA |
A group of students visiting Lebanon from various universities in Europe on 6 August called on ESCWA where they were briefed about the UN Regional Commission and welcomed by several of its senior officials. The students' tour began with a stop at ESCWA’s Library, where they received an overview about its books, publications and documents. The European students also had a chance to see ESCWA's reproduction house where most of the Commission’s publications are produced. |

Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative |
Upon the invitation of the Beirut-based Carnegie Middle East Centre, a group of Arab thinkers discussed on 17 June 2014 the flagship report produced by ESCWA and entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel, Beirut. Following an introduction by Senior Associate at the Carnegie Middle East Centre Maha Yahya, the meeting opened with the statements of United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. |

16th Meeting of Industrial Research Centres’ Coordination Committee in Arab States |
ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) hosted the sixteenth meeting of the “Industrial Research Centres’ Coordination Committee in Arab States” simultaneously with ESCWA Technical Committee’s meeting, in cooperation with the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organisation (AIDMO). The meeting aimed to overcome the hurdles facing technology transfer and development, and to raise awareness on the significance of industrial research in order to achieve an advanced Arab industry. |

Social Water Studies in MENA Region |
ESCWA Regional Advisor on Environment and Water Ralf Klingbeil participated in the conference on “Social Water Studies in the MENA Region” on September 27th and 28th 2014 at the German Jordanian University (GJU) in Madaba, Jordan. ESCWA contributed to the conference through a panel discussion, a presentation, as well as supporting participating scientists from Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. |

Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries |
Upon a request for support through Technical Cooperation from the League of Arab States (LAS), ESCWA jointly with the LAS conducted between 22 and 24 October 2013 a regional training workshop on “Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries” in Amman, Jordan. The workshop was hosted by the ESCWA Technology Centre at the facilities of the Jordanian Royal Scientific Society and attended by 16 participants from nine Member States. |

ESCWA Assistance for the Jordanian National Statistical Strategy |
ESCWA, through an advisory mission, is taking part this week in reviewing the National Statistical Strategy of Jordan, in response to a request by the Department of Statistics (DOS) and in cooperation with the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (Paris 21). |
