Executive Secretary Resumes Duties at Official Beirut Headquarters, Hopes Lebanon Reconstruction Occurs Within National Vision and Plan |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy today expressed a wish to see the reconstruction of Lebanon take place within the framework of a national vision and plan that covers all segments of Lebanese society and of a developmental rather than a humanitarian nature. The Regional Commission’s top official, who returned to Beirut to resume her activities at the permanent headquarters, was received at the Rafic Hariri International Airport VIP lounge by senior UNESCWA officials and a media contingent before delivering the following statement: |

Study on Arab Women’s Movements Launched by UNESCWA |
Speaking at a press conference to launch a pioneering study on the “Status of Arab Women 2005: History of Women Movements in the Arab World” today, UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said the road ahead was still long and fraught with difficulty for Arab women. She hoped for a consolidation of the national social efforts in all their aspects as well as international efforts to propel women to continue their path. Tallawy stressed the inaccuracy of saying Arab women are backward as this places the responsibility on them for a backward society. |

Regional Commission Launches Report on Survey of Economic and Social Developments |
Beirut, 13 December 2017 (Communication and Information Unit) –ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Khawla Mattar today said, “The ESCWA studies should now be followed up on the ground especially that in the last few years conflicts have been mounting in the region. We are not only afraid of what is happening today but also of what would happen tomorrow because of the economic and social roots of conflicts.” |

Kingdom of Morocco Hosts High Level Meeting on Beyond Populism: Economic Challenges and Opportunities in Democratic Transition |
Under the patronage of Mr. Abdelilah Benkirane, Chief of Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, the city of Rabat is hosting a high level meeting organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the other regional commissions of the United Nations on 5-6 February 2013. The meeting is carried out with funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ottawa, Canada. |
