UN Retreats in Turin Discuss Priority Issues |
UN-ESCWA Executive-Secretary Badr Omar AlDafa took part end of August in two UN retreats in Torino, Italy. The first retreat held between 29 and 30 August was the Second Senior Managers Retreat, while the second was the UN Regional Commissions Retreat between 31 August and 2 September. |

Third UN Global Road Safety Week |
Under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Interior and Municipalities Nohad El Mashnouk, and on the occasion of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week, ESCWA convened a workshop in Beirut, which gathered political, cultural and artistic personalities. The workshop was launched with a choir of Abi Bakr Al Siddiq School students who performed traditional songs promoting road safety. Following the opening, attending personalities signed the "Child Declaration on Road Safety". |

World Environment Day 2012Green Economy: Does It Include You? |
Beirut, 5 June 2012 (ESCWA Communication and Information Unit) – The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is marking the World Environment Day (WED) 2012, which turns 40 this year. Since 1972, WED is celebrated annually on 5 June to raise awareness on prevailing environmental issues and encourage global action. The WED 2012 theme is “Green Economy: Does it include you?” WED bears a special importance this year, as it will be hosted in Brazil, only two weeks prior to Rio+20. |

Enhancing cooperation on transboundary water resources in the Arab region |
Beirut, 6 March 2020--Water resources in the Arab region are characterized by scarcity and disparate geographic distribution. The demand for water and the competition over water access are ever-increasing, due to many factors including rapid population growth. So is the need for increased cooperation on the management of transboundary water resources. Against this backdrop, ESCWA and partners held two workshops on the subject, in Beirut, from 3 to 5 March. |

ESCWA Executive Secretary Arrives in Beirut |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim arrived this evening in Beirut to assume his responsibilities. He was received at the Rafik Hariri International Airport by Iraqi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Al Ameri, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Khawla Mattar, ESCWA Secretary Karim Khalil and a number of officials in the Commission. Before his appointment, Alhakim was the Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Iraq to the United Nations in New York since May 2013. |
