Arab countries are caught in an inequality trap |
Conventional wisdom, based mainly on surveyed household income distribution statistics, suggests that inequality is generally low in Arab countries. At the same time, little attention has been devoted to social inequalities, whether in terms of outcomes or opportunities. This column introduces a forthcoming report, which offers a different narrative: based on the largest research project on the subject to date and covering 12 Arab countries, the authors argue that the region is caught in an inequality trap. |

Economic and Social Developments in Western Asia for 2005-2006 |
UN-ESCWA has published the “Survey of Economic and Social Developments in Western Asia, 2005-2006”. The annual publication outlines a set of economic policy principles aimed at contributing to the design of development strategies in the region. The principles are employment-intensive, pro-poor and based on human rights. The Survey was completed before the conflict in Lebanon of July-August 2006. Consequently, some of the economic indicators set forth in this year’s publication, particularly with regard to Lebanon, will need to be revised in a subsequent issue. |

Participants in the “National Conference on Integrated Social Policy in Egypt” held by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) and the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity on 7 and 8 February 2007 at the Pyramisa Cairo Hotel will discuss studies on the success stories in a number of developing and advanced countries like Tunisia, the Republic of South Korea, Malaysia, Norway, and Canada with respect to integrated social policy (ISP). |

On 25 February 2014, UN Undersecretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf launched from Tunis a remarkable report entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” with the participation of Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and a crowd of political, economic, intellectual and public figures.
