Group of Experts on Fossil Fuels, 1st Meeting |
The objective of the group of experts on fossil fuels is to provide a forum for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue and exchange of information that will help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement international agreements, particularly the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. |

Arab Group Meeting on Climate Change |
ESCWA in coordination with LAS and the Arab Negotiations Group on Climate Change organized the Arab Group meeting on 22 April 2020. The meeting was conducted within the activities of the project “Strengthened Arab Networks and Enabling Environment for Climate Action”. The meeting was attended by Ms. Roula Majdalani, Mr. Karim Khalil and Ms. Tarek Sadek. The meeting was attended by 48 Arab negotiators, ambassadors and climate experts and continued for three hours in a very interactive manner.
The meeting discussed the current status of CC global meetings and Arab position priorities on CC issues in light of the current circumstances of the Covid-19. Also assessment of the impacts of Covid-19 on implementation of Paris agreement, updating and submission of NDC’s, overview of status of virtual meetings and workshops related to the COP-26 and GCF board sessions and integrating climate change in new economic recovery plans by the countries were addressed. |

Improving Shared Water Resources Cooperation within the Framework of Global and Regional Agreements |
Most Arab States depend for their water supply on shared water resources as two-thirds of all fresh water resources in the region cross one country border or more. The allocation of these resources among riparian countries has substantial environmental and socio-economic implications at the local, national and regional levels. Therefore, effective cooperation on the management and distribution of the scarce water supplies would contribute to the optimization in water resource allocation and use as well as alleviation of potential conflicts. |

Energy Transition in the Arab Region: Challenges and Opportunities Side Event |
The full success of the energy transition in the Arab region is largely tied to strengthening the regional cooperation and trade among Arab countries and represents a fruitful avenue to support more sustainable energy systems. The benefits of deploying clean energy systems, smart grids, and green corridors are numerous and crucial to diversify the region’s energy mix while developing grid interconnections between countries towards a pan-Arab electricity market. |

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the UN Environment Regional Office for West Asia (UNEP-ROWA) organize the “Virtual Regional Consultation on the Environmental Dimension of the Sustainable Development Agenda: Within the COVID-19 Pandemic, Can We Still Accelerate Action to Achieve SDG12 in the Arab Region?” under the umbrella of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE) processes, to implement the resolution 575, that was adopted during its 31th regular session in October 2019. |
