قررت البطريركية اللاتينية في الأردن تأسيس جامعة في مدينة مادبا التاريخية الواقعة على بعد 35 كم جنوب غرب العاصمة عمان و 60 كم شمال الكرك، وقد حصلوا على الترخيص من مجلس التعليم العالي سنة 2005. وضع حجر الأساس للجامعة البابا بندكت السادس عشر سنة 2009، وتم تغير الاسم بقرار من مجلس التعليم العالي ليصبح الجامعة الأمريكية في مادبا اعتباراً من 20 أيار 2011.
