In the same year, the UN General Assembly endorsed the action by WMO and UNEP in jointly establishing the IPCC.

Il a été créé en 1988 par le Programme des Nations Unies pour l’environnement (PNUE) et l’Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM) avec pour mission de présenter au monde l’état actuel des connaissances scientifiques sur les changements climatiques et leur incidence potentielle sur l’environnement et la sphère socio-économique. La même année, l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies approuvait cette initiative de l’OMM et du PNUE.
