The ESCWA Centre for Women (ECW), in partnership with the Human Rights Institute of the Beirut Bar Association, is organizing the next meeting of its Gender Discussion Series (GDS), to be held under the title: To what extent do the legal systems in Arab countries facilitate access to justice for women? The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday 6 June 2014 at 2:00 PM, on the premises of the Beirut Bar Association located at “Beit Al-Mouhami” in Adlieh - Mathaf area.
The meeting will feature a roundtable discussion in Arabic to be moderated by Head of the Human Rights Institute of Beirut Bar Association Elizabeth Sioufi. The discussants will include: ECW First Social Affairs Officer Lana Baydas, who will examine international and regional standards as they relate to Arab women’s right of access to justice; Secretary General of the National Commission for Lebanese Women Fadi Karam, who will reflect on the right of Lebanese women to access justice, as enshrined in national constitution and laws; and Head of the Human Rights Department of Internal Security Forces Colonel Ziad Kaedbay, who will discuss, from a practitioner’s point of view, applicable procedures to ensure access to justice for women who are subjected to human rights violations.
The ESCWA Communication and Information Unit invites colleagues in media institutions who are concerned with women and human rights issues to give this discussion its due importance.
